JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Appellate Judicial Commission is accepting applications for judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Laura Denvir Stith after 27 years of judicial service, including two decades on the state’s highest court.

A St. Louis-area native, Stith worked as a law clerk for Supreme Court of Missouri Judge Robert E. Seiler before spending 15 years in the private practice of law in Kansas City. She was appointed in 1994 to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, where she served until March 2001, when she became only the second female judge of the state’s high court. Stith also was only the second woman to be Missouri’s chief justice, serving from July 2007 through June 2009. Stith’s retirement will become effective after the close of business today.

Citizens are encouraged to nominate well-qualified candidates for the commission’s consideration. The Missouri Constitution requires that a judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri be at least 30 years old, licensed to practice law in Missouri, a United States citizen for at least 15 years and a qualified Missouri voter for at least nine years next preceding selection. Nominations should be submitted to the commission by e-mail at JudgeVacancy@courts.mo.gov, or by postal mail at P.O. Box 150, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

The commission has reserved Wednesday through Friday, May 19 through 21, 2021, at the Supreme Court of Missouri, at 207 High Street in Jefferson City, to interview applicants and select a panel of three nominees for the governor’s consideration. The commission reserves the right to conduct interviews using remote technology if necessary due to COVID 19 health concerns and recommendations. Regardless of their format, the interviews will be open to the public. The names of those to be interviewed and information relating to the number and characteristics of all applicants will be released publicly prior to the interviews.

The 22nd Circuit Judicial Commission announced that it will interview all 26 applicants – 14 women, 12 men, nine minority – for the circuit judge vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John Garvey. The 31st Circuit Judicial Commission (Greene County) conducted one day of public hearings, interviewed nine applicants and selected a panel of three nominees Thursday for the associate circuit judge position created by the appointment of Judge Jason R. Brown to the circuit bench.

Pursuant to the Supreme Court of Missouri Rule 10, the five-person commission notes the final votes received by each nominee were: Becky J.W. Borthwick received five votes, Margaret E. Holden received five votes and Chantal L. Alberhasky received five votes.

The commission has submitted the panel to Gov. Jay Nixon, who will have 60 days to appoint one of the nominees as associate circuit judge.

The commission is chaired by Judge Mary W. Sheffield, chief justice of the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Southern District, and is composed of lawyers Andrew Bennett and Steve Garner, and lay members Joann Hosmer and Steven Stepp.

The selection and retention of judges in Greene County is governed by the Missouri Plan, also known as the Missouri’s Non-Partisan Court Plan.

The 31st Circuit Judicial Commission will interview all nine applicants – six women and three men – for the associate circuit judge vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Jason R. Brown as circuit judge. Interviews will be conducted on September 24, 2015, and are open to the public.

The 21st Circuit Judicial Commission will interview all 29 applicants — 15 women, 14 men, four minorities, 25 non-minorities — for the circuit judge vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Richard Bresnahan. Public interviews are scheduled for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

The 7th Circuit Judicial Commission is accepting applications for the position of associate circuit judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit (Clay County). The position was newly created by the Missouri General Assembly.

The 22nd Circuit Judicial Commission (City of St. Louis) is accepting applications for a circuit judge vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John F. Garvey. The application deadline is September 16, 2015.

The 21st Circuit Judicial Commission announced that public interviews will be held for the current circuit judge vacancy in St. Louis County on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
